In an assembly-line situation, the rates paid per piece have historically been a point of collective action. By negotiating on-the-job pay increases via wildcat strikes and slowdowns, car manufacturing workers across the world have, time and time again, been able to win big concessions.14 In the 1970s, Tony Cliff argued that, although piece wages had once been ‘a very effective method of intensive exploitation’, that was changing: ‘In highly organised plants, workers can gain from it [piece wages] higher wages and a degree of control over the organisation of the plant.’15 Henry Ford foresaw the possibility of collective struggle over the rate per piece in factory environments, and that threat was part of what induced him to introduce his idea of the 5-dollar day.
He was willing to pay a much higher wage if it avoided the problems of bargaining on the job.16 But when piece wages aren’t collective, and the stages of the labour process don’t rely on the cooperation between one worker and another, they can have the opposite effect. At Deliveroo, piece wages induced an environment where we were all competing for orders.

Conforme avançam os meios de os capitalistas medirem a produtividade individual do trabalho essa forma de remuneração se aperfeiçoa e avança, os motivos já estão bem expostos tanto neste texto quanto em O Capital, o que mostra a conexão do hoje com aquele tempo. E acredito ser uma tendência geral.
Nisto discordo completamente da afirmação de que nas fábricas o salário por peça seja fonte de solidariedade entre trabalhadores. Desconheço essa fábrica e queria entender de onde o autor Cant tira esta conclusão.]]></description>
